And now for something delightfully different...
The Bema Hotel dishes up funky rooms in a hodge-podge of styles in the heart of the Museumplein and directly across the street from the Concertgebouw, the city's main concert hall. When walking into the Bema's parlor room reception, you feel as if you've just entered someone's home. And with only eight rooms, it certainly could be!
American owner Terry Thompson has seen to it that guest rooms are decorated in an eclectic manner. You'll find something antique here, something retro there; here an African tapestry, there a chandelier; here a deco, there a greco ... You get the picture. This place is fun, and it's got a pulse. Since our first visit, Terry has hired an interior designer who continues to play with the styles.
Most importantly, the Bema is cheap, offering discount-priced rooms without facilities and good deals on rooms with private facilities. Basic rooms lack certain amenities, so upgrade if you want a hair dryer, fridge, and iron.
Given its fun spirit, spacious, cool rooms, and convenient location (just blocks from the Stedelijk, Van Gogh, and Rijks museums), we think the Bema is a heck of a deal.
