Pension Gremium is a tiny five-room pension located two floors above the Gremium Restaurant and Bar. It's in the heart of Staré Mesto and thus a fine option for visitors whose primary objective is to find a centrally-located place to crash.
Quarters look like what you'd expect from rooms above a touristy restaurant-bar. All have en suite bathrooms, with free-standing showers, sinks, and toilet rooms. There is no stylistic goal here. Furniture seems randomly chosen—a little Ikea action here, furniture cast-offs there—as do the color schemes—gray linoleum floors, peach and yellow walls. The result is a mix-and-match aesthetic. Though the effect is not unfriendly, clearly this is a place to sleep, not a place to celebrate style.
Unexpected perks include free wireless Internet access and the aforementioned fab Stare Mesto location. There's also the pleasing sense that you're occupying a little secret corner of the city, unknown to most. Another benefit is that the Gremium's rooms are quite large. There's none of the cramped feel of some of Bratislava's other budget hotels.
The Gremium bar appears to be a sports bar above all else. When we visited, it was abuzz with pre-match jitters and football fan energy. The sweet receptionist flatly maintained that the bar usually closes by midnight. We're inclined to believe her.
