We've been fans of the Hotel des Artistes for years. The property offers 65 meticulously clean and very comfortable rooms, and it's only a short walk north of the Stazione Termini. The staff is professional, the rates are reasonable, and the pleasant rooftop terrace overlooks central Rome.
Spread across five floors, rooms are decorated with original artwork and prints of ancient Rome. Mahogany furniture, heavy drapes, oriental carpets, and ornate lamps give the rooms a quality feel. En suite bathrooms round out the deal with clean, modern fixtures.
For those on a smaller budget, the same management offers identical rooms: same décor, same amenities, but with shared toilet at the Hostel des Artistes, located in the same building.
Guests should note that the hostel has a split personality. Private rooms, which are actually on the same floor as some of the hotel's reception, are completely separate from the dorm style accommodation. Spacious, pleasantly decorated, and full of amenities, these rooms are mirror images of their hotel siblings, only without the bathrooms. On the other hand, dorms lined with metal bunk beds are more in tune with a typical hostel. Though the age limit is actually 35, we'd set it about 10 years earlier. Common spaces, furnished with colorful, plastic furniture, have a fun vibe.
No matter which place you choose, be sure to check out the rooftop deck. It's a fantastic place to chill out.
