Located a few blocks west of the Hauptbahnhof, the family-owned Pension Adlerhof is a likeable four-story option with both traditional and modern rooms.
Good-value triples and quads make it a prudent choice for families or small groups.
Some rooms have charming hand-painted canopy beds and Austrian folk furniture, while others are more modern and plain. All rooms, regardless of style, are aesthetically pleasing and have satellite TV and telephone. Most have a private bath with shower.
Rooms facing the front have soundproofed windows and views over Elisabethstrasse. Note that traffic is banned at night, which cuts down on noise. Back rooms face a dreary courtyard and offer less privacy.
After staying here for a week, we learned the hard way that Adlerhof does not accept credit cards—though they'll exchange currency. A standard Austrian breakfast is served in an appealing breakfast room with booths, ornate molding, and oil paintings on the walls.
If you don't mind the sex shops across the street, the neighborhood has its perks: cheap Internet cafes abound, and self-caterers will love nearby Billa, a cheap supermarket chain. Reception's open all night, which is comforting since the area can be a bit spooky in the wee hours. And busy Saint-Julien-Strasse, lined with restaurants and shops, is two blocks away.
