Don't cry for me Argentina! (Or at least don't cry unless Casa Peron is booked solid!). We can't stop singing the praises of this budget hotel, an eclectic and arty 11-room hotel right on the border of Santa Croce and San Polo is unforgettable.
Gianrico Scarpa and his family run the place as a hotel-gallery, or at least that's how it feels. There's artwork everywhere—that of Signor Scarpa, his artist guests, and his friends. The family tchotchke collection is also on display, including Oriental fans, Russian Orthodox icons, art deco lamps, and myriad collages.
Hospitality takes no second tier here. The friendly family (and pet parrot Pierino) greets you at the door. Checkerboard tile leads the way to reception whereupon Pierino squawks and zooms to his perch on a curtain rod until you've headed to your room.
Each mid-size bedroom sports a highly original piece of artwork, set off by otherwise very basic settings: white walls, plain wood furnishings, and bright bedding. Bathrooms come in shades of pink and gray, with rounded corner showers for extra space (a real find in Venetian hotels).
Balconies offer views of the surrounding gardens, rooftops and the nearby church dome.
